When Steve Jobs came out with apps for the iPhone, it was a cynical ploy to take advantage of people who wouldn't know any better and make gobs of cash. It's not that it didn't work, it did. But there was an alternative. Even in 2007, there was nothing that you could deliver in an app that you could not deliver directly over the web. If Steve had pushed this paradigm of software, we might live in a world where software delivery was democratized. Anyone who remembers Newgrounds had a glimpse of that kind of world. It would have been a world that was easier for everyone - the people who create content and the people who consume it - but there is one thing it would not have done - it would not have served to enrich Apple. And so, we don't live in that world, Apple actively killed that world on purpose.

At first I thought, if I were Superman, a perfect secret identity would be "Clark Kent, Dentist," because you could save money on tooth X-rays. But then I thought, if a patient said, "How's my back tooth?" and you just looked at it with your X-ray vision and said, "Oh it's okay," then the patient would probably say, "Aren't you going to take an X-ray, stupid?" and you'd say, "Aw, get outta here," and then he probably wouldn't even pay his bill. - Jack Handy
